Almost all people will have had the experience of having their photograph taken at some point in their life however not many people will have had the experience of having their portrait being taken by a fine art professional photographer.

What is Fine Art Photography?

According to the Oxford dictionary, fine art is:
  • creative art, especially visual art whose products are to be appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual content.
  •
an activity requiring great skill or accomplishment.

Fine art portraits are much more than just pictures of someone, the end result is a beautiful work of art.
I see fine art as an art form and create beautiful, timeless, emotive images of children.  Each fine art portrait session is developed from a concept or idea and I work with the parent’s and children to develop these ideas, which will reflect some aspect of the child’s life or personality.
A fine art portrait is created with the intention of hanging within the family home.   This style of photography cannot be compared to contemporary photography in which the subject or event is captured to record reality. Fine art photography has a more painterly feel.
I plan my fine art portrait sessions to deliver maximum impact imagery in a classic and distinctive style. These portraits are timeless and capture the true essence of the sitter’s character in a vision created by myself and in collaboration with the sitter.   I often use props and a lighting technique called Chiaroscuro used by some of the greatest artists in history, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, and Rembrandt.  Chiaroscuro is the art of using light and shadow,  allowing a pool of light to fall onto the sitter, picking them out so they are the main focus of the frame.
So just like the high art oil painting portraits of yesteryear, fine art portrait photographs have become the family heirlooms of the modern day.
If you like the idea of your child’s portrait hanging on the walls of your great-grandchild’s home, then a fine art portrait photograph is where I would guide you. To find out more please visit my fine art portfolio.
Remember the true value of a photograph is never realised until many years later.
