Three beautiful girls visited my studio on Saturday for a brand new stylised session I’ll be offering from my new Glasgow studio. Fine art portraiture is something I’ve wanted to spend more time one for a couple of years now but just never had the time to dedicate to mastering it.  It’s a much more skilled and specialised area to work in. For example, there is more involved planning for this kind of shoot, there is set styling, clothing styling, hair and makeup and the lighting is more technical but the results are rather magical.

I knew I wanted to create something classic and timeless and set about planning which clothing the model’s should wear.  For hair and makeup, I called upon the skills of Hannah Buist who worked her magic with Michelle. To achieve the fine art portrait “look” requires simple but beautiful outfits which will stand the test of time. Bold patterns and logo will become dated over time, neutral, plain clothing work best. I asked everyone to bring some darker clothing for this shoot, the darker tones blended in really nice against my hand painted backdrop from Seamless photo.

All 3 of my models were a real joy to work with, Arianna is a child model with The Model team based here in Glasgow, Arianna’s mum Valerie was fantastic, bringing beautiful outfits and helping pose Arianna. They were both patient with me whilst I adjusted the lighting to exactly the way I wanted it, which was super soft and pretty. Arianna is a complete natural in front of the camera and knew exactly how to pose, creating some timeless portraits of her.

Michelle is a lovely lass who met at a wedding I was shooting a couple of years ago. She got in touch with me at the end of last year asking me to photograph her and her sister Julie who was visiting from Shetland. I love all things Shetland and Shetlanders are an amazing bunch of folk, and Michelle is no exception to that rule, she is just one of the nicest people ever, so after her family session I asked her to pose for me again and she said yes. I had no doubt in my mind that Michelle would be amazing, she has the widest smile and is very natural in front of the camera and you can see that in the images.

And lastly Alex, we discussed the look I was trying to achieve and she walked into the studio and nailed the posed straight away. Her Mum told me she’s been excited for days about the shoot. I think she looks amazing.

So why should you book a fine art portrait session?

  • I find that parents stop having their child’s portraits taken after the age of 2 or 3-years-old, probably due to the fact that a second or third baby arrives and just finding the time to come into the studio is quite difficult. The consequence is losing out on some beautiful portraits documenting your child thought the older years of childhood.
  • If you wish to remember your child in a classic and timeless portrait which will be passed down the generations still to come. There many different types of styles final art portraiture, monochrome, fashion, timeless and classical, any of these genres can be planned to suit your child’s personality and make the portrait session completely bespoke for them – just like in the photographs posted below.
