Family Portraits – What Should We Bring? If you’ve ever found yourself wondering what to bring to a family photo shoot, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get (right after “What should we wear?”). Most families want to make their session feel personal and meaningful, but aren’t sure where to start. This guide is here to help you decide exactly what to bring to a family photo shoot to reflect your family’s personality and create images you’ll treasure for years.

1. Bring a Few Personal Props

Props don’t need to be fancy – just meaningful. A much-loved toy, a cosy blanket, or even something tied to a family hobby can bring an extra layer of storytelling to your photos. Over the years, we’ve seen everything from pet pigs to guitars to mini electric cars come through the door!

It’s especially easy when you’ve got wee ones – let’s be honest, they rarely leave the house without a teddy or toy in their arms!

If there’s something that reflects your family’s hobbies or shared memories, bring it along – you’d be amazed at the magic a simple item can bring to a photo.

2. Create a Theme That Reflects You

Thinking of going a bit further? Why not choose a theme that speaks to your family’s personality? Whether it’s rustic and relaxed, whimsical and fun, or a bit of old-school glamour, themes help shape the look and feel of your session in a way that’s visually striking and personal.

And if you’ve got an idea brewing, we’re always happy to chat it through and help bring it to life. I love getting creative with you!

3. Outfits & Props – Keep It Cohesive

If you’re bringing props or working around a theme, a bit of outfit coordination can pull everything together. Think about colours, textures, and tones that work well as a group, not matchy-matchy, just thoughtfully styled.

I’ve put together a 20-page guide to help with outfit choices – it’s packed with useful tips and examples, you’ll receive that when you book.

4. Make the Most of the Season

Each season brings its own kind of magic, so why not use it to your advantage? Spring flowers, summer light, autumn leaves, or winter sparkle – nature can offer the most beautiful, natural props of all.

We’ve also got plenty of seasonal touches at the studio, so if you’re not sure what to go for, just ask – we’re here to help.

5. Be Yourselves

At the heart of it all, the best family portraits are the ones that feel real. Props and themes are great fun, but nothing beats those honest, unfiltered moments – the giggles, the cuddles, the quiet glances.

We’ll guide you through it all, but the magic comes when you simply relax and be yourselves.

6. Think About Your Walls

When planning what to bring to a family photo shoot, it can help to think ahead to where your images will live. Are you imagining a bold statement piece in the living room, or a cosy, rustic gallery wall on the stairs? If you’ve got a certain space or display style in mind, let me know — I can help you choose props and backdrops that will look perfect in your home.

7. Prep the Kids (and the Grown-Ups!)

A little preparation goes a long way. Chat to the kids beforehand about what to expect and keep things light and fun. Bring snacks (non-messy ones!), a drink, and a favourite toy or comforter. For the grown-ups: don’t stress! You don’t need to know how to pose – I’ll guide you every step of the way and keep things relaxed.

Ready to Plan Your Family Session?

Adding personal touches to your session is such a lovely way to make your portraits truly yours. Whether you’re dreaming of a sporty setup, a storybook-inspired shoot, or just want to capture your family as you are right now – the possibilities are endless. And the memories you’ll take away? Timeless.

If you’re still unsure what to bring to a family photo shoot, I’m just a message away. Every session is unique, and I’d love to chat about how I can make yours feel truly personal. Let’s create something special together.

Until next time,
Dawn
