The Story of The Family Portrait | Glasgow Family Photography

So, you’ve probably noticed how period dramas like The Crown, Downton Abbey, and others are all about those family portraits hanging on the walls. It got me thinking – where did this whole family portrait thing come from? We often link the love for photos to the 21st century, but it turns out that people have been into family portraits for a couple of centuries. Let’s look into the fascinating history.

Birth of Family Portraits

Back in the early 19th century, the first-ever photo came to life thanks to a French inventor named Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. Fast forward to 1840, and we’ve got daguerreotypes – these fancy one-off photos in golden frames. They were a bit out of reach for most people back then, but as photography skills improved, things got more affordable. By the 1860s, family portraits were all the rage, but why?

Why Were They So Popular?

Four reasons seem to explain the family portrait frenzy:

  1. Affordability: Before photos, getting a family portrait meant commissioning an artist, which was costly and time-consuming. Photos, while still a bit pricey, made it way more doable for families.
  2. Queen Victoria’s Influence: Queen Victoria jumped on the photo train, using it to capture royal life. Her enthusiasm rubbed off on the middle class, who wanted a slice of the photo action.
  3. Family Memories: In times when life expectancy, especially for kids, wasn’t as high, families realized a portrait could freeze a moment in time, making memories last.
  4. Status Symbol: Think of Victorian family portraits as the 19th-century version of social media bragging. Whether you were climbing the social ladder or sharing news with far-off relatives, a family portrait was the way to go.

Are Family Portraits Still Cool in 2023?

Now, with social media flooding our feeds with family pics, you might wonder if family portraits are still a thing. Well, the thing is, those online photos often get a quick glance and then vanish. Imagine having some stunning family pics on display in your home or gifting them to your loved ones. Especially after the last few years, where we’ve learned how much family matters, a beautiful family portrait can make a big difference.
